Extreme heat and some medicines can be a risky combo. Here's what to know (2)

Extreme heat can raise the danger of heat-related illnesses and threaten health in a more subtle way — by amplifying the side effects of many common medications.

Hot weather, too, can damage medicines such as insulin that require refrigeration. Inhalers can explode. Epinephrine injectors such as EpiPens can malfunction. Meds delivered in the mail can deteriorate.

US Navy pilots come home after months of shooting down Houthi missiles and drones

  • By BEN FINLEY - Associated Press

U.S. Navy fighter pilots have come home in Virginia after months of shooting down Houthi-launched missiles and drones. The fighting in the Middle East had become the most intense running sea battle the Navy has faced since World War II. Dressed in green flight suits, the aviators stepped from their F/A-18 Super Hornets onto the hot tarmac of their base in Virginia Beach. They were embraced by women in summer dresses and kids carrying American flags. The USS Dwight D. Eisenhower aircraft carrier strike group was protecting vital commercial shipping channels and allied warships under fire in the Red Sea.

US Sen. Susan Collins says she will once again not vote for Donald Trump in 2024

  • By PATRICK WHITTLE - Associated Press

Sen. Susan Collins didn’t vote for Donald Trump for president in 2016 or 2020, and the third time will not be the charm. Collins, a longtime moderate Republican senator from Maine, told reporters on Friday that she intended to write in former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley’s name on the ballot in November. The move harkens back to 2016, when Collins said she wrote in then-House Speaker Paul Ryan for president over Trump. Collins is the only New England Republican in Congress and the only Republican holding statewide office in Maine, where Trump has twice won one electoral vote.

Biden says delegates can vote their conscience — and he’s right. But mass defections remain unlikely

  • By LEAH ASKARINAM - Associated Press

President Joe Biden say his pledged delegates could vote their conscience, and party rules confirm that. But historical precedent and the delegate selection process make it likely that the vast majority will stick with him anyway. At least 3,896 delegates are pledged to Biden. But that “pledge” isn’t an ironclad agreement. DNC rules encourage but don’t specifically require delegates to vote for the candidate they’re pledged to support. Democratic party rules also allow Democratic candidates to review and alter each state’s slate of delegates pledged to them, ensuring that they are filled by loyal supporters.

US Transportation Department to invest nearly $400 million for new Interstate 55 bridge in Memphis

Officials say the U.S. Department of Transportation is providing nearly $400 million to build a new Interstate 55 bridge connecting Tennessee and Arkansas across the Mississippi River. The work would replace the existing 75-year-old span. The Tennessee governor and a congressman from Memphis said in separate news releases Friday that the Transportation Department informed Congress it is investing more than $393 million to build the new bridge. The existing Interstate 55 bridge was built in 1949. It is one of two that connects Memphis with Arkansas, along with the Interstate 40 bridge. Officials have been pushing for a modernized I-55 bridge since the I-40 bridge was closed for weeks in 2021 to repair a crack.

Pelosi and Democratic leaders try to guide their party through Biden uproar

  • By LISA MASCARO - AP Congressional Correspondent

The uproar over President Joe Biden's ability to win reelection is leaving Democrats at a standstill. They are odds over whether to stick with Biden or press on with trying to persuade him to end his reelection bid. Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Rep. Jim Clyburn, a veteran leader of the Congressional Black Caucus, are playing oversized roles. They are generational allies of the president but also trusted voices who can bring frank concerns to Biden. That is giving space to the current congressional leadership — House Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer — to navigate the party’s political future.

Abortion access ballot measures are the center of a new wave of legal and procedural questions across the U.S. In Arizona, there's a dispute over language to describe a measure that could go before voters in November. In Arkansas and Montana, there are battles over ballot access. Anti-abortion groups have been pushing hard against efforts to enshrine abortion rights in state constitutions. On ballot questions over the last two years, voters have supported the position favored by abortion rights advocates. Abortion-related questions will be before voters in at least a half-dozen states this year.
