Every Beat of Your Heart - Chapter 1 - Frenchtoastcrunch (2024)

Chapter Text

Iruka had woken up that morning in a good mood. It was sunny, birds were singing in the trees, and the scent of something delicious cooking downstairs wafted through the air.

He took an extra-long shower, got dressed in his usual business casual wear for teaching, and straightened his ponytail before meeting Kakashi and Cat on the terrace for breakfast. After enjoying the traditional Japanese meal and downing a couple of cups of coffee he engaged in the rest of his morning routine, namely getting dicked down by his silver-haired, pain-in-the-ass mafioso lover. For this morning's session, he was perched on the railing surrounding the terrace as his lover f*cked him, giving the ANBU guards and the neighbors across the way a front-row seat to the action (nothing they hadn't seen before.) Kakashi f*cked him so hard that the decorative hand-crafted railing he was perched upon cracked, then broke completely, and a half-naked Iruka tumbled down into the expansive manicured gardens below, splashing into the Koi pond with a watery smack.

He was a wet, soaking mess, his outfit was ruined, and to add insult to injury also had a half dozen splinters buried in his ass from the busted railing (all of which Kakashi thought was just hilarious.)

Afterward, his unaffected boyfriend strode off to his office and left the cleaning up to Cat, who hurriedly helped the disgruntled and unamused teacher clean up, change, and dig the slivers out of his backside.

Teaching was fairly uneventful, well, as "uneventful" a day could be, considering he was holding class for two dozen future mafiosos, assassins, and warlords. Iruka had been the exclusive teacher for children being raised in the Konoha mafia for the past five years. There had been quite an adjustment period at the beginning, but now he was quite used to the peculiarity of it all, from having to explain to his students the definition of “restraint” and them having no form of reference for the word at all (his lover still didn’t know the definition of the word either), to having multiple conversations with faction heads regarding students coming to class armed. (NO WEAPONS. Yes, that included knuckledusters, poison rings, and pen knives.)

Although it took him half a decade to cultivate a reputation worth respecting, now he ran an orderly and effective classroom, teaching the next generation of mafiosos everything, from reading and writing to etiquette and law. Although the stern teacher had rubbed most of the faction heads the wrong way at the beginning, not used to having someone talk back to them and make demands, they now respected Iruka not only as Kakashi’s lover but as the tenacious and hardworking teacher he was. What had once started as a part-time teaching gig as a tutor for Naruto was now a full-time job, keeping him busy and productive.

The school day ended around 3pm and the kids vacated Konoha Academy, a building near the Konoha tower specifically built for Iruka and his ever-growing gaggle of students. It was a bit much, considering the state-of-the-art equipment, bulletproof windows, and armed ANBU that patrolled every second of the day, but it was practically Iruka's second home and he was grateful- a far cry from the accommodations of his first teaching job, which was the basem*nt of a dingy and dark orphanage on the bad side of the tracks.

He quickly cleaned up and graded papers, then at 5pm he bid his empty classroom farewell and hurried across town to meet Naruto for their weekly dinner date. The boy had just turned 17 and was tall, built, and almost painfully handsome with his unruly sunshine hair and playful azure eyes, the faded scars on his cheeks adding to his charm. He was training to take up the mantle of one of the Konoha clan branches, slated to replace his guardian Jariya within the next few years. Unlike his predecessor he was kind and wise, making the members of the mafia fall in love with him, believing in his plans and goals for the future. His personality and sincere nature produced a different type of loyalty than the ones gained by Tsunade and Jariya, one much stronger than a bond bought by fear or coercion. Iruka had no doubt he would be a great leader one day; he would never regret saying yes to Jariya's request that he teach Naruto all those years ago.

At 5:30 he was seated next to Naruto at the bar in their favorite restaurant, both nursing their cups of sake while waiting for their specialty ramen orders. The blonde had his face crunched up in an annoyed scowl as he told him a story about Sasuke, the younger son of the Uchiha faction head. According to Naruto they were archnemesis, which Iruka was sure meant that they were both pining so hard they didn’t know exactly where to put their emotions; he hoped it would work out eventually for them. He continued to keep a close eye on their budding romance because he couldn’t help thinking that he was only one year younger than Iruka had been when he married Mizuki. Seeing how young and inexperienced Naruto was, it wasn’t surprising how much his life went to sh*t when he tied the knot with that scumbag. But he wasn’t thinking about Mizuki anymore, he had finally moved on and was happy in the life he had now. He was fairly certain that Kakashi had fed his ex to the sharks or something, since he had been conveniently "missing" for a long, long time.

Honestly, he could not care less.

So there they were, enjoying pleasant conversation and sweet drinks when the day turned to sh*t. It started with the headache, the pinpoint stabbing right between Iruka's eyes, followed shortly by blurred vision. Iruka recognized the effects of Rohypnol immediately. There were some perks(?) of being the lover of a sad*stic mafioso, and one of those was that he had been drugged on multiple occasions. Yeah, unhealthy relationship, blah blah blah. Not important right now. The important thing was that he and his companion had just under one minute to take action before the effect of the drugs took hold. He gritted his teeth, his eyes darting around as he looked for attackers, available weapons, and the closest exit.

"What's wrong?" Naruto's brows furrowed as Iruka jumped up from his seat, reaching for him. He gripped the younger man by the shirt, feeling his hands getting sweatier, “You need to get out of here right now.”

Naruto didn’t ask, trusting Iruka implicitly as he hurriedly rose.

"Drugs in the sake." He explained, blinking quickly as he tried to clear his vision. "They're after you. You have to go, now. Don't worry about me!" He pushed him gently with his hand, urging him to run. Against Iruka's wishes, Naruto picked him up and hefted him over his shoulder.

"I'm not leaving here without you." He stated as he adjusted the weight on his shoulder, then took off running as if Iruka weighed nothing.

"Let go of me! It will be easier to get away without me!"

"Shut up! I'm not leaving you here, sensei!" The blonde dashed through the restaurant, hitting his hip on one of the tables as he hurried down a dark hallway and kicked open a door labeled employees only. Iruka could tell the younger man was feeling the effects of the drug given his awkward gait and lack of balance overtaking him as he muscled through the kitchen, pushing aside enraged chefs and waitresses as they bustled here and there. There were the sounds of a struggle taking place and Iruka urged himself to focus and stay awake, but the world smeared into a mix of colors and sounds as he lost the battle and fell into unconsciousness.
